If youre like me and thought that the picture profiles on Sony cameras had no effect on raw image capture, then youre about to be surprised. Lets get Undone. [offbeat music] ♪ Gerald Undone ♪ ♪ Hes crazy ♪ Whats happening, everybody? Im Gerald Undone and where am I going and why am I in this handcart? So, today I was working on my review for the Sony a6400 and I was comparing some images really closely and I noticed they looked different despite everything else being exactly the same and I finally narrowed it down that it was the picture profile causing this problem and I feel bad because Ive told other people in the past that picture profiles dont really have an impact on raw image capture because they dont really on almost any other camera and I guess I just came to assume that. I figured out exactly whats happening and it turns out, they do have an impact, but only one element and thats the gamma. So, I have a whole bunch of images here to show you to prove this point, bu

The picture styles do not affect the RAW image. What they do is provide metadata that tells the photo editor how to bias the settings. In DPP (Canons photo editor) you can simply change the settings to whatever you want.
All raw files require subsequent editing so, unless you want to edit your digital images, there is little point in shooting raw files.
The issue is that the camera calculates exposure based on which color profile you choose. That does affect RAW images.
If you want better image quality, more creative control, and are willing to spend a bit more time on the computer to get those, then you should shoot RAW. If you want convenience and speed and are willing to sacrifice some image adjustment, then you should shoot JPEG.
RAW editors allow you to adjust almost anything you can imagine: exposure, sharpness, color, noise, and more. So unlike with a compressed format (JPEG, for example), if you happen to take an underexposed photo in RAW, you may very well be able to save it by pulling out more detail from the shadows.
As you can see, changing the white balance setting in the camera doesnt affect the underlaying RAW data in any way. The histograms are the same, and adjusting the white balance to the same value on all of the shots results in the same look and color.
To convert a RAW file to a JPEG image file, open your RAW file in your chosen editing software. From there, simply make a copy of the file, save, and export it as a new JPEG image file. Youll then have two files the original RAW file and the converted JPEG image.
