Yes, you can change the color of your log cabin stain. However, it depends on the type of stain you initially used. If you used a transparent or semi-transparent stain, it is easier to change the color by applying a different stain.
The only way to bring the logs back to a uniform, natural bare wood color is to use a chemical stripper such as our Strip Brite formula along with scrubbing and hose rinsing, or in conjunction with a pressure washer which scrubs and rinses at the same time.
There are basically two types of finishes we recommend semitransparent and solid body stains. The type of finish chosen depends upon the log homes specific wood, the appearance the homeowner desires, and the level of maintenance that is acceptable to the homeowner.
Oil-based stains are a one-coat application because the oil will repel the second coat whereas with water-based stains, the second coat can still absorb.
In most cases, we recommend removing the old stain or coating by blasting the logs or wood with crushed glass. This media is as fine as table salt, silica free and 100% environmentally friendly. Once the old coatings are removed and the logs are brought down to bare wood, a new stain can be applied.
Five Steps to Staining a Log Home or Cabin Step 1: Clean the Logs and Other Wood Surfaces. Before staining, it is essential to clean the logs thoroughly. Step 2: Apply a Product Called Revive Step 3: Apply the Stain. Step 4: Allow the Stain to Dry. Step 5: Apply a Second Coat (Water-Based Only)
If only a trickle remains in the can, you can open the lid and let the liquid air dry. For larger quantities, try these water- or latex-based stain-drying techniques: Pour the remaining wood stain into kitty litter or shredded newspaper. These absorbent materials soak up the liquid, and it will dry out more quickly.
How to Clean Your Logs Before You Stain Corn Blasting. For larger jobs that require a docHub amount of stripping, we recommend corn-blasting. Sanding. For lighter-duty and smaller jobs, a palm sander with 60- to 80-grid paper is a viable alternative. Power Washing. Chemical Strippers.
