This is generally caused by the files character encoding. Most EPUB files use UTF-8 encoding, but unless this is explicitly defined in the EPUB file, the Send to Kindle service will assume its ISO-8859-1 encoding which will lead to strange and unexpected formatting on the output file.
The Kindle also supports DRM free ePub files (like those you download from Google Books) however they must be converted from ePub into a file format the Kindle can understand such as PDF or MOBI.
Since Kindle devices do not support EPUB files directly, you need to convert EPUB to Kindle-compatible formats like MOBI. This method may seem a little complicated at first, but dont worry, it gets easier every time you do it.
Should You Use MOBI or EPUB Files? Because of its much smaller file sizes and wider compatibility, EPUB is the better format. The only reason to use MOBI used to be for compatibility with Amazons e-reader and app, but this is no longer an issue since Kindles now support EPUB.
Upload Via Send to Kindle On amazon.com/sendtokindle, click Select files from device and select the book you want on your Kindle. This tool supports PDF, DOC, DOCX, TXT, RTF, HTM, HTML, PNG, GIF, JPG, JPEG, BMP, and EPUB formats on ebooks up to 200MB in size.
Does Kindle Paperwhite support EPUB? The Kindle Paperwhite does not support the epub format natively. However you can still use the Kindle to read files by loading the epub file into the Calibre program and then allowing it to convert to Mobi when you trasfer the file to your Kindle.
You can get books on your Kindle reader by buying directly from Amazons store, but if you have EPUB files (such as from Project Gutenberg) you have the ability to read them directly on your Kindle. This was once a somewhat tricky procedure, relatively speaking, but has gotten increasingly easier over time.
Is EPUB or PDF better? EPUB is better than PDF for eBooks. PDFs may be better for printing and possibly graphically detailed eBooks such as childrens books or comic books, but EPUBs are designed to be reflowable, resizable, and reader-friendly.
