The Older Americans Act (OAA) was passed in 1965 as part of President Johnsons Great Society initiative with the goal of supporting older Americans to live at home and in the community with dignity and independence for as long as possible.
First enacted in 1965, the law establishes priorities and operations for key programs and services that help keep our nations adults age 60 and older healthy and independent. OAA has been updated several times through the reauthorization process, most recently in 2020 with another due in 2024.
The final rule further delineates the specific relationships and circumstances that qualify and clarifies that when the person receiving care is an adult with a disability, the caregiver may be that persons parent ( 1321.3). for state agencies and AAAs ( 1321.1, 1321.5, and 1321.55).

About the Older Americans Act First passed in 1965 and last reauthorized on March 25, 2020, the OAA authorizes a wide range of programs and services, most of which focus on helping older adults age in place.
The OAA has been reauthorized and amended numerous times since it was first enacted in 1965. Most recently, the Supporting Older Americans Act of 2020 (P.L. 116-131) was signed into law on March 25, 2020. The act authorizes appropriations for OAA programs through FY2024.
