However, if the EGT probe is installed, lean the mixture to 100˚ F on the rich side of peak EGT for best power operation. For best economy cruise, operate at peak EGT. If roughness is encountered, enrich the mixture slightly for smooth engine operation.
As the pilot leans from a full-rich mixture, EGT rises as the amount of fuel entering a cylinder is reduced. At some point as we lean, the fuel/air ratio is reduced so that any additional leaning sees EGT values start to drop.
If everything is working properly, 1250 to 1300 F. is a safe turbine inlet temperature, even for sustained running, mile after mile. Above 1300 F. things can start to get edgy. Remember, excessive EGT damage is cumulative.
Gradually lean from rich until the engine begins to roughen up. Now gradually enrich just enough to be out of the roughness. Maximum mixture smoothness occurs just rich of best power.
At Manta Performance, we recommend that your EGT stay under 550C (as measured at the turbo outlet) to assure your engines safety. What happens when your EGT gets too high? Nothing good! Certain parts of your engine can fail due to the excessive heat produced.
As the mixture is leaned and we move to the right, all tracked parameters increase and peak, but at different points. For example, the most HP is available at around 100 degrees (F) rich of peak EGT (ROP). (For economy, many airframe manufacturers recommend running the engine in this range, usually 50-75 degrees ROP.)

Beginning at full rich, as you reduce the fuel flow (i.e. you lean the engine) the exhaust gas temperature will rise. Eventually, it docHubes a maximum, or peak temperature (peak EGT) and any further leaning causes the EGT to drop. Mixture settings that are rich of peak EGT provide more power.
