When seals dive hundreds of metres deep, they have to survive on the oxygen they breathed in above the surface. They can store large amounts in their blood and muscles. Oxygen is also conserved by a lower heart rate and reduced blood flow to parts of the body.
Seals are well adapted to cold polar environments with thick blubber layers that act both as a food reserve and insulation. Most seals also have a layer of fur, giving additional insulation on land.
Seals only have two sets of cones humans have three. So seals may have a difficult time seeing a variety of colors but are most likely sensitive to the blues and greens of the ocean. Seals are sensitive to light. The photoreceptor cells on the retina that see different brightness are called rods.
Harbor seals are well adapted to their marine lifestyle. A thick layer of blubber aids in temperature control. Body shape permits ease of movement through the water and limb development to flippers makes for efficient propulsion.
When diving, blood is shunted away from tissues that are tolerant of low oxygen levels to the heart, lungs, and brain, where oxygen is needed. A harbor seal has a greater volume of blood than a land mammal of similar size; therefore, it can retain more oxygen.
Among the behavioral means of reducing heat loss, harp seals on ice can keep their fore flippers held against their bodies and their hind flippers pressed together to reduce the exposed surface area and thereby conserve heat. Such adaptations seem adequate for maintaining homeothermy, even in cold climates.
Seals have large eyes to allow them better vision underwater. On land their vision is greatly reduced. Their lenses are enlarged and almost round, adapted for focusing on light that is refracted upon entering the water. Their eyes are specially adapted for sight in dark and murky water.
Seals see very well under waterbetter than they do in bright light above water. Their eyes are adapted with round lenses (like fish) and a large iris that fully opens underwater. On land the iris closes the pupil to a small pin point that lets the seal see clearly through the round lens.
Some mammals, such as cats, camels, polar bears, seals and aardvarks, have full nictitating membranes. Often called a third eyelid or haw, it may be referred to in scientific terminology as the plica semilunaris, membrana nictitans, or palpebra tertia.
Adult harbor seals can dive as deep as 1500 feet and stay underwater over 30 minutes! To do this, they rely on their amazing oxygen storage capabilities. Harbor seals have a grater volume of blood than other land mammals their size. More blood means more oxygen storage.
