In North America and some other countries, the default list separator is a comma, so you get CSV comma delimited. In European countries, a comma is reserved for the decimal symbol, and the list separator is generally set to semicolon. That is why the result is CSV semicolon delimited.
To escape commas in a CSV file so they dont break the formatting, wrap the entire field that contains a comma in double quotes . Copied! The second field (two, three) contains a comma, so we had to wrap it in double quotes to treat the comma as a literal character and not as a separator.
When working with CSV files in Excel, the issue of symbols becoming question marks is typically due to character encoding problems.
Trailing commas Saving an Excel file as a CSV file can create extra commas at the end of each row. Trailing commas can result when columns are deleted or column headers removed. When the file is uploaded to Clever, an extra trailing comma will skew subsequent rows of data, preventing them from being processed.
Some of your values may contain comma characters. Surround these values with double quotes ( ) to avoid clashes with the use of commas for separators.
Depending on your Excels regional settings, your default delimiter/separator may either be set to semicolons (;) or commas (,) to separate items in a CSV file. This can either cause file upload issues or combine all the field values into Column A (see example below).
Rows: CSV files are essentially tables with each line representing a row of data. Rows are separated by line breaks. Columns: Within each row, values are separated by the chosen delimiter. These values correspond to individual columns within your dataset.
Click the Data tab, and select From Text. Find your CSV file stored on your computer, and click Open. In the Text Import Wizard window, be sure Delimited is selected as your file type. In the File origin drop down, select 65001 : Unicode (UTF-8) Check the My Data has headers box. Click the Next button.
