Converting your quick-release hub to a thru-axle may seem daunting, but its actually a simple process. If you follow the steps weve outlined in this blog, youll be able to make the switch with ease. Remember, this upgrade will docHubly improve your ride quality, so its definitely worth the effort.
Thru axles generally perform better than quick releases in all scenarios, which is why youll find them on most mid to high-end bikes sold today. That said, theyre also more expensive, heavier than quick releases, and make wheel removal a slightly more time-consuming task.
Can I Convert My Quick Release Bike to Use Thru-Axles, or Use Different Size Thru-Axles? There is no universal kit that lets you convert any bike to use thru-axles, or switch between axle sizes. Youll need to do some research to find out if theres a solution that works with your bike.
Yes, but its a bit of a project. You will need to remove the axle and transfer the hardware to a new axle that has a hole through it for the quick release skewer.
This can usually be done by unscrewing the end caps of your quick-release hub and gently pulling out the skewer. Make sure to keep any washers or spacers that may be attached to the skewer. Now its time to your new thru-axle.
If youre fortunate enough to have a newer hub though, its simply a matter of popping off the QR end caps and installing the correct thru axle end caps for the fork youre using. This adapter from Problem Solvers will allow you to mount a 12mm thru axle hub in a QR fork, but not the other way around.
