With the quick-release parts removed, you can now the thru-axle adapter. This is done by inserting the adapter into the hub and securing it using bolts or screws. Its important to tighten the bolts or screws properly to ensure that the adapter is securely attached to the hub.
For this reason, thru-axles should be measured by overall length. Depending on the thickness of the dropouts, total length is usually 20-30mm longer than OLD. The most common front thru axle OLD dimensions are 100 mm, 110 mm, and 150 mm for front axles and 130mm, 135mm, 142mm, 148mm, and 197mm for rear axles.
Thru axles generally perform better than quick releases in all scenarios, which is why youll find them on most mid to high-end bikes sold today. That said, theyre also more expensive, heavier than quick releases, and make wheel removal a slightly more time-consuming task.
And so, we got Boost 141, or Boost QR. Sometimes also referred to as Boost 1419, which is not precise definition. Instead of using the 12 mm axle, it uses 5 mm legacy Quick Release rod or skewer and same legacy end caps. So much for the story of stiffness, which is one of the buzz words in cycling.
If youre fortunate enough to have a newer hub though, its simply a matter of popping off the QR end caps and installing the correct thru axle end caps for the fork youre using. This adapter from Problem Solvers will allow you to mount a 12mm thru axle hub in a QR fork, but not the other way around.
Some thru-axles have quick release levers. This type of axle is sometimes called a thru-axle skewer. At a glance, it can be hard to tell the difference between these axles and quick release skewers. Heres how you can tell which attachment system your bike uses.
