The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model is a state of the art mesoscale numerical weather prediction system designed for both atmospheric research and operational forecasting applications.
You will need a Linux system with the following compilers, libraries, and tools: Compiler: Intel C Fortran compilers (recommended, version 15 or above), or gfortran. MPI Library: MVAPICH2 (version 2.3 or above), OpenMPI, or Intel MPI. A MPI library is required even if you are running on a single node.
Eta usually is labeled from 0 to 1 from the top of the model domain to mean sea level. The Eta coordinate systems allows the bottom atmospheric layer of the model to be represented within each grid box as a flat step, rather than sloping like sigma in steep terrain.
Actually, WRF output vertical coordinates (eta levels) are just indexes. The levels just distribute the model levels between the model top and the surface.
