Leaf water potential (LWP) represents a useful index of soil water stress experienced by plants, thus providing insights into plant water relationships (Farooq et al., 2012). Upon low water availability, plants develop mechanisms to cope with water stress by decreasing LWP.
A low water potential means that water has a low force driving it to move from one area to another.
Water moves from an area where water potential is higher, to an area where it is lower. This means that it would move from the cell to the solution outside.
The internal water potential of a plant cell is more negative than pure water because of the cytoplasms high solute content. Because of this difference in water potential, water will move from the soil into a plants root cells via the process of osmosis.
Plants reduce water loss by closing their stomata, developing thick cuticles, or by possessing leaf hairs to increase the boundary layer. Stomata are quick to respond to environmental cues to protect the plant from losing too much water, but still allowing in enough carbon dioxide to drive photosynthesis.
If the water potential in the ambient air is lower than the water potential in the leaf airspace of the stomatal pore, water vapor will travel down the gradient and move from the leaf airspace to the atmosphere.
This process is affected by environmental factors such as air temperature, humidity, wind, and soil water availability. As soils become dry, the tension within the plant increases because it becomes more difficult for the roots to extract water from the soil.
