All topics have the same basic structure, regardless of topic type: title, description, prolog, and body. All DITA topics must have an ID, a title, and a body.
Most topic types contain some common elements, like a Title and Short Description. Some topic types contain unique elements that are specific to the purpose of that topic. Tasks, for instance, consist of a series of steps as well as elements to define prerequisites, context, and results.
Information typing is the practice of identifying types of topics, such as concept, reference, and task, to clearly distinguish between different types of information. Topics that answer different reader questions (How ? What is ?) can be categorized with different information types.
The latest version of DITA (DITA 1.3) includes five specialized topic types: Task, Concept, Reference, Glossary Entry, and Troubleshooting. Each of these five topic types is a specialization of a generic Topic type, which contains a title element, a prolog element for metadata, and a body element.
DITA is not just a standard but a methodologysome might even call it a philosophy. Unlike a Word document, which produces a static piece of content, each piece of DITA content represents a unique XML file. By standardizing and leveraging content, DITA allows for content reuse across multiple publications.
