Can you get a Pap smear or pelvic exam on your period? The answer is yes! If youve scheduled an appointment with your gynecologist and youre on your period, there is no need to cancel the appointment. Normal vaginal bleeding should not get in the way of a Pap smear or pelvic exam.
As far as I know, a Pap smear doesnt affect your uterus enough to alter your period.
Specimens from some women may also show reactive cellular changes, which is the way cervical cells appear when infection or other inflammation is around.
The best time to have a Pap smear is in the middle of your menstrual cycle. The middle of your cycle falls around the time you ovulate. Thats day 14 if your menstrual cycle is 28 days long. If it is shorter or longer, you should count 14 days from the first day of your last period.
Some women may also get abnormal Pap smear results if theyre about to start or recently finished their period. This is due to the changes menstruation can cause in the cervix. If your results come back as abnormal, our providers will discuss additional testing to identify whats causing your abnormal results.
Try to schedule your Pap test for the middle of your menstrual cycle between 10 to 20 days after the first day of your period. Dont use a vaginal douche, vaginal medications or contraceptive (spermicidal) creams, foams or jellies (unless your doctor has told you to).
Its best to book an appointment for a time when: youre not having a period also try to avoid the 2 days before or after you bleed (if you do not have periods, you can book any time) youve finished treatment if you have unusual vaginal discharge or a pelvic infection.
