If there is any negligence by healthcare professionals in your ACL injury treatment, it may be possible to claim compensation. This may be due to incorrect diagnosis, surgery mistakes, medication mistakes or failure to inform the patient about the risks of surgery.
Bridge-enhanced ACL repair (BEAR) is a new FDA-approved procedure that allows a torn ACL to heal itself and does not require graft tissue to be taken from another part of the body. Duke Health is one of the few centers in the U.S. to offer the BEAR procedure.
In the USA, 68% of MLS physicians prefer bonepatellar tendonbone (BPTB) autograft for ACLR in elite soccer players [6]. Similar trends exist with other sports in the USA as BPTB autograft is the preferred graft of choice for NHL, NFL and NCAA American Football athletes [7-8].
You can get Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits or SSI disability benefits for your torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) if you can prove to the Social Security Administration (SSA) that your injury prevents you from working any type of job for at least a year.
Patellar Tendon It attaches from the knee cap to the shin bone. It is the graft with the longest track record and is consider by many to be the gold-standard for ACL reconstruction. In most circumstances this is the graft recommended for professional athletes and in any young active individual.
There are four commonly used grafts for ACL reconstruction. Patellar tendon autograft. The surgeon removes the middle third of your patellar tendon and pieces of bone (bone plugs) from your shin and kneecap. Hamstring tendon autograft. Quadriceps tendon autograft. Allograft.
As for ACL graft options, there are allografts (from a donor source) or autografts (harvested from the athlete). The gold standard for professional athletes (or any younger athlete) is an autograft.
Nonsurgical treatment consists of physical therapy, activity modification and use of a brace. The goal of physical therapy is to strengthen the muscles around the knee to compensate for the absence of the ACL. Specifically, strengthening the muscles in the back of the thigh (the hamstrings) is helpful.
