When we log into a network, when we connect to a server, we need some way to authenticate ourselves. And so thereamp;#39;s a series of protocols behind the scenes that make sure that our username and password, or any other information that weamp;#39;re providing to authenticate, is received properly and weamp;#39;re able to get access to the resources that we need. One of the first types of methods of doing this was an authentication protocol called PAP. And that stands for Password Authentication Protocol, and extremely simple, extremely basic protocol. If you recall Kerberos in an earlier video, there was a lot of encryption. There was a lot of communication to certain servers. It was a multi-headed process that took place. PAP is nothing like that. PAP is incredibly simple in the way that it works. Everything thatamp;#39;s communicated, in fact, with PAP is completely in the clear. Thereamp;#39;s no encryption here whatsoever. If I was to type my user name, [? ajames, ?] and my

PAP is more susceptible to cyberattacks than CHAP because it doesnt have the built-in safeguards that CHAP has. Specifically, CHAP doesnt transmit passwords, has an ongoing authentication mechanism, and uses an encrypted calculation to help each entity verify the identity of the other. What is CHAP Authentication and How Does it Work? | Ping Identity Ping Identity identity-fundamentals Ping Identity identity-fundamentals
With PAP, instead of the server sending a login request prompt and then waiting for the user to respond, the username and password are sent to a remote access server in an LCP (link control protocol) packet. Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) Security Explained Okta identity-101 pap-security Okta identity-101 pap-security
CHAP is a stronger authentication method than PAP, because the secret is not transmitted over the link, and because it provides protection against repeated attacks during the life of the link. As a result, if both PAP and CHAP authentication are enabled, CHAP authentication is always performed first.
No mutual authentication: CHAP does not provide mutual authentication, which means that the network cannot authenticate the user in the same way that the user authenticates the network. This can leave the network vulnerable to spoofing attacks.
Setting Up PAP Authentication (Task Maps) Gather preconfiguration information. Collect user names and other data that is needed for authentication. Update the password database, if necessary. Ensure that all potential callers are in the servers password database. Create the PAP database. Modify the PPP configuration files. Configuring PAP Authentication (System Administration Guide Oracle Help Center pppsvrconfig.auth-2 Oracle Help Center pppsvrconfig.auth-2
The PAP and CHAP authentication schemes were initially designed for authenticating remote users connecting to networks or systems using PPP. CHAPs three-way handshake protocol offers enhanced security against password guessing and eavesdropping attacks compared to PAPs two-way handshake.
PAP is simple and supported by all network operating systems. CHAP doesnt support very old operating systems. It uses cryptographic hash functions to improve security. Considering the security of authentication, CHAP is more secure than PAP.
The PPP authentication protocols are Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) and Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP). Each protocol uses a secrets database that contains identification information, or security credentials, for each caller that is permitted to link to the local machine.
