hi Chuck Huber here with a stata quick tip I want you to just stop what youre doing for a second and I want to show you two of my favorite commands and all of Stata margins and margins plot if youre already familiar with these two commands and you folks can go back to watching cat videos or whatever you were doing before but for the rest of you if you give me just two or three minutes I promise this will save you a ton of time and it will revolutionize the way that you present the results of your regression models its not going to be a tutorial there are plenty of videos on our YouTube channel that show you how to use factor variables and margins and margins plot what I want to do here is just show you some of the things that you can do with margins and margins plot and the hopes of motivating you to learn more about these two amazing commands so Im going to be using the Hosmer and lemma shallow birth weight data so lets say that I want to fit a regre

After you fit a choice model, margins provides estimates such as marginal predicted choice probabilities, adjusted predictions, and marginal effects that allow you to easily interpret the results of a choice model. Many possible margins can be calculated for choice models.
The margins command estimates margins of responses for specified values of covariates and presents the results as a table.
MARGINAL EFFECT OF THE MEAN (MEM) MEM is the partial effect of on the dependent variable (y) conditioned on a regressor (x) after setting all the other covariates (w) at their means. In other words, MEM is the difference in xs effect on y when all other covariates (RACE and FEMALE) are at their mean.
For categorical variables, the effects of discrete changes are computed, i.e., the marginal effects for categorical variables show how P(Y = 1) is predicted to change as Xk changes from 0 to 1 holding all other Xs equal. This can be quite useful, informative, and easy to understand.
Predictive margins are estimates of the response mean and are typically used when fixing some, but not all, predictors in the model at specified values. The marginal effect of a continuous predictor at an observation estimates the slope of the mean response curve at that observations setting of the predictors.
After an estimation, the command mfx calculates marginal effects. A marginal effect of an independent variable x is the partial derivative, with respect to x, of the prediction function f specified in the mfx commands predict option.
Marginal effects for continuous variables measure the instantaneous rate of change (defined shortly). They are popular in some disciplines (e.g. Economics) because they often provide a good approximation to the amount of change in Y that will be produced by a 1-unit change in Xk.
marginsplot is a post-margins command. It graphs the results of the margins command, whether those results are marginal means, predictive margins, marginal effects, contrasts, pairwise comparisons, or other statistics; see [R] margins.
