The United Nations Climate Change Conference, better known as COP 27, is was held in Sharm el Sheikh (Egypt) from 6-18 November under the theme "Together for Implementation" and with a view to renewing and extending the agreements reached in the historic Paris Agreement.
At the Sharm el-Sheikh Climate Change Conference (COP 27), countries came together to take action towards achieving the world's collective climate goals as agreed under the Paris Agreement and the Convention. The conference took place from 6-20 November 2022 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.
The discussions highlighted solutions – on themes including food security, vulnerable communities and just transition – to chart a path to overcome climate challenges and how to provide the finance, resources and tools to effectively deliver climate action at scale.
These topics were: food security; water security; finance; energy security and futures; vulnerable communities; and the need for a “just transition” away from fossil fuels.
In 2015, the Paris Agreement established the GGA with the aim of driving collective action on climate adaptation. The GGA was expected to be the counterpart to the goal of limiting global temperatures to “well below 2°C” and to 1.5°C, with the hope of raising the visibility of adaptation on par with mitigation.
The Paris Agreement established the global goal on adaptation of enhancing adaptive capacity, strengthening resilience, and reducing vulnerability to climate change in the context of the Agreement's temperature goal of limiting warming to 1.5°C or 2°C.
The Global Commission on Adaptation (GCA) seeks to elevate the visibility and political importance of climate adaptation, and encourage solutions such as smarter investments, new technologies and better planning to become more resilient to climate-related threats.
This year's themes are: Finance, Science, Youth & Future Generations, Decarbonization, Adaptation & Agriculture, Gender, Water, Ace & Civil Society, Energy, Biodiversity and Solutions (the newest theme this COP).
It will be held in the Egyptian city of Sharm El-Sheikh on 6-18 November. The UN is urging the world's industrialized nations to 'lead by example' by taking 'bold and immediate actions'. Five key issues to watch are nature, food, water, industry decarbonization and climate adaptation.
COP27 saw the launch of a new five-year work program at COP27 to promote climate technology solutions in developing countries. COP27 significantly advanced the work on mitigation. A mitigation work programme was launched in Sharm el-Sheikh, aimed at urgently scaling up mitigation ambition and implementation.
