The quality of light is a spectrum that goes from soft light to hard light. Soft light is associated with positive emotions, making the subject look more vibrant and happy. Hard light is more intense, creating harsh boundaries between highlights and shadows.
For direct flash, youll want to experiment with various shutter speeds, apertures, and ISO settings. Generally, a faster shutter speed (1/125 or higher) and a smaller aperture (f/2.8 to f/9) help balance the flash with ambient light. Keep the ISO setting as low as possible (100-400) to minimize noise.
Working with a low f-stop is key here, ideally 1.2 or 1.4. Shutter speed is also important, because youll want to let enough light in while still keeping your subject in focus. Practice ahead of the big day by experimenting with both to get comfortable with the technique.
Best Aperture for Weddings Again, wide aperture, such as f/1.8 or f/2.8, can help to create a shallow depth of field. This will blurr the background and emphasize the subject. Additionally, the wider aperture youre able to use the better youll be able to balance that with your shutter speed.
I have shot in manual mode only for prolonged stretches and I do still use it if that is the best option, but for wedding photography or anything where things can unfold quickly, I find aperture priority the best choice.
Lighting Methods for Photographing Wedding Receptions Raw On-Camera flash. This is the simplest flash lighting possible. Remote Strobes. By far the most elaborate, setting up off-camera strobes requires the photographer to have at the very least 1 set of strobes. On-Camera Bounce Flash. Ambient Light.
Natural light can also look amazing. In general, I think most wedding clients prefer that look. Its hard to beat window light or light during golden hour. Ive tried to use flash power to create that look, but most of the time, it doesnt look as good.
Utilizing Shutter Speed In Wedding Photography For ceremonies, we recommend not going under 1/60 seconds to avoid getting a blurry image. For receptions, being that theres a good chance youll be using lighting, shooting between 1/200th to 1/60th will provide the best images.
