This summer, children in the Rio Grande Valley participated in a UTRGV chess camp, where they learned from top players, including Grandmaster Alex Mistah, the camp's leader. The camp attracted eighteen students, including two brothers, Savvy Fei Yan and Ivan Lopez, who were excited to improve their chess skills. Activities included playing games, tournaments, and solving puzzles, with assistance from fellow Grandmaster Vladimir Bellows. Mistah noted that many members of the UTRGV chess team began their journey in similar camps, highlighting the growth and improvement of young players through such experiences. Participants enjoyed the opportunity to learn from the best and compete with peers.
