With light adaptation, the eye has to quickly adapt to the background illumination to be able to distinguish objects in this background. Light adaptation can be explored by determining increment thresholds. In an increment threshold experiment, a test stimulus is presented on a background of a certain luminance.
Adaptation is the adjustment of the eye to different luminances. When changing from light to dark and vice versa, adaptation is initially performed by enlarging or reducing the pupil. Most of the adaptive capability is provided by two photoreceptors on the retina.
It is this Ca2+ decline that has been implicated as the main factor underlying light adaptation because it leads to the feedback regulation of various phototransduction cascade components.
Photoreceptor Adaptation Light adaptation occurs primarily in the photoreceptors. Light activates a cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) phosphodiesterase, which decreases cGMP, closes channels, and lowers the Ca2+ concentration. Low Ca2+ produces several effects, including an increase in the synthesis of cGMP.
the process by which the eye adjusts to conditions of high illumination, as occurs when a person exits a dark theater into a sunny parking lot.
Light adaptation is the adjustment of the eyes when we move from darkness into an area that is illuminated. During this adjustment period the sensitivity of the retina decreases. The cones of the eyes begin reacting to the brightness of the light and become more active than the rods of the eye.
For example, when we go from a room where we are exposed to bright light to a dimly lit room where we cannot see at all, it takes some time for our eyes to adjust to this darker environment. In fact, the brighter the light in the first room, the longer it takes to adjust our vision in the darker room.
noun. : the process including contraction of the pupil and decrease in rhodopsin by which the eye adapts to conditions of increased illumination.
