Dr. David Hawkins from the Marriage Recovery Center discusses the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing the need for adaptability and resilience. He reflects on how the pandemic brought people face-to-face with their true selves, revealing deeper issues such as irritability, anger, and anxiety. Hawkins stresses that the illusion of control is something we must let go of, as life is inherently unpredictable and constantly changing. The key takeaway is the importance of embracing change and developing resilience in the face of life's uncertainties rather than clinging to familiar routines and patterns.

For example, when we go from a room where we are exposed to bright light to a dimly lit room where we cannot see at all, it takes some time for our eyes to adjust to this darker environment. In fact, the brighter the light in the first room, the longer it takes to adjust our vision in the darker room.
With light adaptation, the eye has to quickly adapt to the background illumination to be able to distinguish objects in this background. Light adaptation can be explored by determining increment thresholds. In an increment threshold experiment, a test stimulus is presented on a background of a certain luminance.
In dim light, your pupil expands to allow more light to enter your eye. In bright light, it contracts. Your pupil can range in diameter from 1/16 inch (1.5 mm) to more than 1/3 inch (8 mm). Light adaptation occurs at all levels of the visual system, from photoreceptors to central neurons. Yet, the function of the entire visual system depends on the ability of the photoreceptors themselves to adjust their sensitivity to the ambient lighting situation. Adaptation begins to unfold rapidly after the onset of light with a time constant of approximately 1 s, causing the rods sensitivity to steady light to decrease by nearly two log units. Thereafter, a much slower phase of adaptation evolves with a time constant of 9 s.
The cone cells adapt within 10 minutes but then are overtaken in performance by the rod cells. The rod cells can take several hours to become completely dark adapted and docHub their peak sensitivity to low light conditions.
Its much faster for our eyes to adapt to bright light than to adjust for the darkness. Cones attain maximum sensitivity in five to seven minutes while rods require thirty to forty-five minutes or more of absolute darkness to attain 80% dark adaptation. Total dark adaptation can take many hours. How Eyes See at Night | CooperVision coopervision.com blog how-eyes-see-night coopervision.com blog how-eyes-see-night
The iris is the colored part of the eye that surrounds the pupil. The iris changes in size as a function of the amount of light. Bright light makes the pupil get smaller (the iris gets larger) and vice versa. The pupillary area change from minimum to maximum is about 16:1. Iris yorku.ca eye iris yorku.ca eye iris
