Glare is the amount of light emitted from luminaires at high angles known to cause glare. A luminaire with a high G rating has more light in these high-angle ranges than a fixture with a low G rating, explains Hojnacki.
A BUG Rating stands for backlight, uplight, and glare. Backlight (B) is the light directed behind the fixture, uplight (U) is any light directed upward above the horizontal plane of the luminaire, and glare (G) is the amount of light emitted from the luminaire at high angles.
Many of us have experienced this scenario: A neighbor installs a new light fixture on their property. Its unshielded and casts a bright light that spills onto your property and perhaps even inside your home. This is known as light trespass, which can cause much agony and frustration.
All outdoor fixtures need to be fully shielded, installed and maintained in such a manner that the shielding does not permit light trespass in excess of one- tenths foot-candles. Lighting Color: The correlated color temperature of all outdoor lighting shall be 3,000 Kelvin or less except for seasonal lighting.
How are BUG ratings calculated? BUG ratings are calculated using three components: backlight (B), uplight (U), and glare (G). Each component is evaluated separately, and then these values are combined to form the overall BUG rating.
Lighting zones (LZ) reflect the base (or ambient) light levels desired by a community.
Uplight is the amount of light directed above the horizontal plane of the luminaire. Often used to help evaluate skyglow. When a fixture has a U0 rating, it tells us the fixture emits zero light up into the night sky and could be a candidate for projects requiring a Dark Sky-compliant fixture.
Lighting Zones (LZ) are classifications that determine how much light as well as how much up-light, backlight, and glare are acceptable in a location. Each LZ has a list of acceptable BUG ratings. BUG Ratings report the backlight (B), up light (U), and Glare (G) for an outdoor light fixture.
