Traditionally, the first of the surnames is the fathers family name and the second is the mothers. However, one may now put their mothers family name first if they wish. The fathers family name is more commonly used to address people.
This is usually the first of the two surnames as they appear in writing, meaning that Anna Martnez Garca would usually be referred to as seora Martnez, and her partner Luis Sanchez Prez would be referred to as seor Sanchez.
For the last two hundred years surnames in Spain have been passed from parents to children ing to the same general rule. People have two surnames, which are inherited from their parents. The first surname is the fathers first surname and the second the mothers first surname.
Naming practices developed differently from region to region and country to country. Yet even today hereditary names tend to fall into one of four categories: patronymic (named from the father), occupational, nickname or place name.
Marriage. In Spain, upon marrying, one does not change ones surname. In some instances, such as high society meetings, the partners surname can be added after the persons surnames using the preposition de (of).
Spaniards have a personal name(s) followed by two surnames the fathers paternal family name and then the mothers paternal family name. For example: Hector Marίa GONZALEZ LPEZ. People may have two personal names (e.g. Hector Marίa).
In Spain and Spanish American countries, except Argentina, each person has two surnames. Traditionally, the first surname is paternal and comes from the father, while the second surname is maternal and comes from the mother.
