Of Mice and Men connects to the real world through its depiction of the Great Depression, highlighting themes of poverty, displacement, and the pursuit of the American Dream.
Themes of racism and racial injustice run throughout the play, particularly in relation to the character of Crooks. Racial slurs and derogatory descriptions are repeated throughout the piece, and social exclusion is prevalent. Specifically, the characters use the N-word as a slur to refer to Crooks.
Challenges have included complaints about profanity, morbid and depressing themes, and the authors alleged anti-business attitude. Others have called it derogatory towards African Americans, women, and the developmentally disabled.
Racial segregation, gender rights, and handicap vulnerability are all problems in Of Mice and Men that reflect the society at the time. Curleys wife, Crooks, and Candy are discriminated against on the ranch just like they would be in society.
Of Mice and Men is based in the time of the Great Depression in America in the 1930s. The two main characters are George and Lennie who are very close friends, roaming around America together looking for work.
Answer and Explanation: The driving conflict in Of Mice and Men centers on George and Lennies dream of one day buying their own farm. Their primary goal is to earn enough money to become independent men, no longer beholden to others for work.
In John Steinbecks novel Of Mice and Men, the authors message about the human rights issue is that marginalized individuals, such as racial minorities and those with disabilities, suffer systemic oppression and are denied their basic rights.
