How to adapt image in the Credit Agreement

Hi! Im Zixta Martinez, and Im part of the outdocHub team at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Implementation Team. Weve received a number of e-mails suggesting that legal speak be removed from contracts, in order to make these agreements simpler and easier to understand. We couldnt agree more. We believe credit agreements are too long and full of legalese. This makes it hard for people to understand the costs, risks, and benefits of these products. Unfortunately, too much of the competition in the consumer credit market has been based on who can make the fine print the finest, loading it up with tricks and traps. That sort of competition destabilizes families financial situations. As we saw in the run-up to the recent crisis, it could also destabilize the whole economy. Instead, a well-functioning market should be based on who can offer the least expensive and most useful products. Thats why it will be a major goal of the CFPB to increase transparency in credit agreements

Its important to know that giving credit on its own does not entitle you to use an image. For instance, an image published under an All Rights Reserved license (the default copyright grant, unless stated otherwise), means no rights are granted for any use.
If the image you want to include in your work does not have a Creative Commons license or is not in the public domain, you should contact the copyright holder to get permission to use their work, especially if your work is going to be published for commercial purposes.
If the publisher of the figure you wish to reproduce does not use RightsLink, you can request permissions directly from the publisher. There is often a link or email address on the publisher website for permission requests, which will either link you to RightsLink or to another method for obtaining permissions.
To use a reproduced figure or table, you must obtain permission from the owner of the copyright of the original figure or table (usually the publisher), and you must also include attribution to the original source(s) in your manuscript in the Source notes below the reproduced figure or table.
Adaptation of a figure means changing the previously published form, for example by adding or subtracting information. Both reproduction and adaptation of previously published work require copyright permission to have been granted.
If a figure or table is adapted, it is modified from its original appearance but still closely resembles the original. Permission must be obtained from the owner and attribution to the original source provided.
To request re-use of a journal article or material (such as figures or images) in a journal article, you most often need to request permission from the publisher. Most journal articles have a link on the abstract page that says Get rights and content (or similar).
If you revise, adapt, or transform a work that someone else owns, you have created a derivative work. If an ordinary observer would say that your version is basically the same as the original, then you must obtain written permission from the copyright owner to use the derivative work you created.
