Only those invited by the TIFF programming team are eligible to submit to the Wavelengths category on FilmFreeway. If you were not invited to submit to Wavelengths, you are welcome to submit to another category in which your film is eligible.
The ability to store image data in a lossless format makes a TIFF file a useful image archive, because, unlike standard JPEG files, a TIFF file using lossless compression (or none) may be edited and re-saved without losing image quality.
Upon submission, Films must have a World, International or North American premiere status. At TIFFs sole discretion, TIFF reserves the right to accept submissions with only a Canadian premiere status, but the Films premiere status will be taken into consideration when final programming decisions are made.
For example, 6,876 films were submitted to the Toronto International Film Festival (tiff) last year. And only 94 movies were screened (58 feature films and 36 short films). Thus, the acceptance rate for the TIFF was 1,4 %.
On average, filmmakers spend around $1,500 submitting their film to as many festivals as possible to give it the highest shot at being accepted and seen by audiences. Its an investment, but it can be worth it in the end.
Short films must have run times of 40 minutes and under (including credits). Feature films must have run times of 60 minutes and over (including credits). Primetime serial content must have a combined run time of 60 minutes and over (including credits).
Thus, the acceptance rate for the TIFF was 1,4 %. As for the rest of the festivals, the usual number of films submitted ranges from a few hundred to a thousand or more. Submission fees can be a severe limitation on the number of films. Festivals with free entrance can receive up to three thousand movies or more.
