Encryption and keys You can share AMIs that are backed by unencrypted and encrypted snapshots. The encrypted snapshots must be encrypted with a KMS key. If you share an AMI that is backed by encrypted snapshots, you must allow the AWS accounts to use the KMS keys that were used to encrypt the snapshots.
To update an AMI, launch an instance and update its software. For that instance to have access to the AWS services that it needs, create an AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) role with the correct permissions policies attached.
You can copy an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) into or to another AWS Region using the AWS Management Console, the AWS Command Line Interface, or SDKs, or the Amazon EC2 API, all of which support the CopyImage action.
Share an AMI (console) In the navigation pane, choose AMIs. Select your AMI in the list, and then choose Actions, Edit AMI permissions. Choose Private. Under Shared accounts, choose Add account ID. For AWS account ID, enter the AWS account ID with which you want to share the AMI, and then choose Share AMI.
You can copy the same AMI to multiple regions simultaneously. The console-based interface is push-based; you log in to the source region and select where youd like the AMI to end up.
To copy your AMI from one region to another region, you can follow the below-given steps. Login to your AWS account. Go to your EC2 dashboard. Click on the AMI option. Select your AMI and in Actions, you can find Copy AMI.
You can copy AMIs with encrypted snapshots and also change encryption status during the copy process. You can copy AMIs that are shared with you. Copying a source AMI results in an identical but distinct target AMI with its own unique identifier.
You can share an AMI with specific AWS accounts without making the AMI public. All you need are the AWS account IDs.
