most people think of cruciate ligament injuries as being injuries which are exclusively sports related but of course thats not true usually when a crucial area go is whats happening is that there is a twisting injury to the knee and the two bones the shin bone and the thigh bone are rotating about one another and its that rotation that snaps them enough when I first see patients whove injured down anterior cruciate ligament theyre usually very upset they feel that theyve suffered a devastating injury I commercial that we now have an operation that is highly successful using modern techniques that will give them a ligament back that is functional that will enable them to do all the things they want to do and the success rates are over 95% thats a great operation which is why I like doing it so much I look after you dont worry itll be fine [Music] most people think of Annie as a hinge joint in fact its much more complicated than that and the movement of the joint is controlled

Its important to remember that, during the first 4-12 weeks after your surgery, your ACL graft is at its weakest point in the recovery process, since the graft requires time to grow and adapt to the bone and tendon.
The patellar tendon graft (PTG) has always been the gold standard for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Yet, most orthopedic surgeons prefer hamstring grafts for younger athletes and cadaver grafts for older patients.
An important decision must be made prior to surgery regarding the type of graft that will be used to reconstruct the ACL. The 2 main groups used for grafts in ACL reconstruction are allografts and autografts.
There are four commonly used grafts for ACL reconstruction. Patellar tendon autograft. The surgeon removes the middle third of your patellar tendon and pieces of bone (bone plugs) from your shin and kneecap. Hamstring tendon autograft. Quadriceps tendon autograft. Allograft.
The patellar tendon and hamstring autografts are the most common choices for ACL reconstruction. The patellar tendon runs from the knee cap (patella) to the lower leg bone (tibia). Surgeons have the most experience with this autograft and it is the most widely used.
In general, there are three main graft options: a patellar tendon autograft, a hamstring autograft, and an allograft. An autograft comes from the patients own body, whereas an allograft comes from a cadaver donor. An allograft can come from patellar tendon, hamstring tendon, achilles and other ankle tendons.
The strongest option is the BTB graft. The graft incorporates more solid into the bone due to the bone plugs on either end of the tendon. However, BTB grafts have been known to have the slowest recovery time when it comes to meeting rehab milestones and returning to sport.
During ACL reconstruction, the torn ligament is removed and replaced with a band of tissue that usually connects muscle to bone (tendon). The graft tendon is taken from another part of your knee or from a deceased donor.
