DITA was designed specifically for optimizing the publishing of technical documentation. Well come back to that, but first, its good to know *how* DITA is different. Most systems organize and manage content as documents or pages. These documents are written in a linear way. The ideas within these documents intertwine and overlap. DITA content is written AND organized differently. DITA content is written as component parts, topics, which are arranged in maps, and ideally stored in a Component Content Management System. DITA stands for Darwin Information Type Architecture, and is a generic and adaptable XML-based open standard to manage, create, and publish content. Defined and maintained by the OASIS DITA Technical Committee, DITA uses topics, maps, and output formats to generate documents.
The real difference between DITA and DocBook-like XML applications is DITAs focus on modularity, reuse, and interoperation, which results in a very different architecture as compared to more traditional XML applications for published documents.
For instance, you may want to combine several types of information into a single page, or you may have chosen to create many small DITA topics for reuse purposes but feel they are too small to be useful to a reader by themselves. This is referred to as chunking.
DITA XML is often used by technical writers to create curriculum, help documentation, user guides and other such materials. Its one of the best standards for structured content on the market for all kinds of industries.
DITAs modularity also allows for reuse as topics can be used in more than one deliverable at once. DITA increases productivity and enables better collaboration for faster delivery, and you can distribute work so writers can work in parallel thanks to topic-driven architecture.

Unlike a Word document, which produces a static piece of content, each piece of DITA content represents a unique XML file.
