A brief caption must appear below each figure, preceded by the figure number in bold. The reader should be able to understand the caption without reference to the text.
For the in-text citation directly below the image, try to address the following elements in your citation: Title. Creator name. Repository information (museum, library, or other owning institution) Image source (database, website, book, postcard, vendor, etc.) Date accessed.
Captions should be concise but comprehensive. They should describe the data shown, draw attention to important features contained within the figure, and may sometimes also include interpretations of the data. Figures are typically read from the bottom up, so captions go below the figure and are left-justified.
In ACS, images, charts and graphs are referred to as figures. A caption should be placed immediately below the figure. Captions begin with the word Figure followed by the figure number. When cited, figures should be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals.
