You adapt only to what you train for: Light exercise in the heat builds your tolerance only for light exercise. Once youre acclimatized, keep doing what youre doing to stay that way. Otherwise, youll lose those abilities within about a month. The best time to start acclimatizing is when temperatures are moderate.
It typically takes a healthy person two weeks to get accustomed to the climate of a new place. But if your trip is less than two weeks (which it probably will be for most people), you can do several things to cope with temperature changes whether they are related to altitude, extreme heat or cold weather.
To get acclimatized, he says, you could go outside on a hot day and engage in mild activitylike taking a walkfor a very short period of timeabout 15 minutesand then repeat the process the following day. It takes the average person between nine and 14 exposures to become acclimatized, Kenney says.
The body will acclimatize to the level of work demanded of it. Simply being in a hot place is not sufficient. Doing light or brief physical work in the heat will acclimatize you ONLY to light, brief work. More strenuous or longer tasks require more acclimatization.
