The couple must have the ceremony in New York for the license to be valid. After the ceremony, the couple must file the completed license with the issuing clerk and, within 15 days, they will receive a Certificate of Marriage. If a license is not filed,there is no legal marriage.
The law permits amendments to be made to a Certificate of Marriage Registration where the error was not the result of any intended fraud, deception or attempt to avoid the effect of any valid law, regulation or statute.
A New York State Marriage License is valid for 60 days (except for active military personnel, for whom the validity runs for 180 days). A Marriage License issued in New York can be used anywhere within New York State but may not be used outside New York State.
You can request a copy of a marriage record online, by mail, or in person. If you submit your request online, you must still complete the application by mail or in person. The fee for a domestic marriage record (short certificate) is $15 and $10 for each additional copy.
This certificate is automatically sent by the issuing clerk to the applicants within 15 calendar days after the completed license is returned by the officiant (person who performs the marriage ceremony). It serves as notice that a record of the marriage is on file.
