If you know how to make pancakes from a box then you can make these DIY pavers with a bag of cement mix. Seriously, working with cement is as easy as making pancakes. This is such a fun DIY project for the spring and summer.
Laying patio slabs Before you can start laying slabs, you need to dampen them so they dont dry out your concrete too quickly. Then, lower your first paving slab into position. Lay it into the concrete mix and gently tap it with a rubber mallet so its fixed in place. Ideally it wants to sit 15mm in the mortar.
Ive used ordinary sharp sand (think of this as just a very fine all-in ballast) building sand and white cement. There are no other additives apart from water. The ratio of sand to cement is 3:1. The three parts sand may be made of a mix of different sands.
Compact the area with a tamper until you have a firm base. Use a garden hose to lightly wet the paver base to make it more solid. Save time when youre working with a large area by using a plate compactor, a machine that compresses gravel and different kinds of soils.
Making your own pavers is objectively cheaper, from a mathematical point of view. However, the hard work, time investment, and overall long-term quality of the final product make the process of making your own paver not worth it.

With imagination and a little practice, concrete or course mortar can be made to look like real stone and be used in a variety of applications; whats more, anyone with a bit of patience and little know-how can make concrete products to use in their own garden.
For smaller patios, you can consider mixing and pouring the cement yourself. Since our concrete pavers were going to be so large, it simply made sense to spend extra on a cement mixer. To avoid the added step of adding wire mesh to each paver form, we asked that fiberglass be mixed in with the cement.
