Body donation is when a persons deceased body is given to a body donor program and/or a licensed anatomical facility. This can be done either through a persons written consent before their death or with the consent of their senior available next of kin after their death.
Some medical conditions, such as contagious diseases and extreme emaciation or obesity, can render a body unacceptable for scientific study. Additionally, certain circumstances of death may preclude donation. A final decision can only be made at the time of death.
The body is not acceptable for anatomical study due to, for example, being extremely emaciated, being extremely obese, or having an extensive medical or surgical history.
Donors must be 18 or over. There is no age limit over 18. General Height: Under 6 4 in height. General Weight: must be height and weight proportional; BMI under 27-28, but not skeletal.
Although the University of Michigan Anatomical Donations Program does not charge a fee for its services, the donors family or legal representative is responsible for certain costs.
