Upon taking effect on July 1, 2023, HB 543 authorizes an individual to carry a concealed weapon, including a firearm, if he or she possesses a CWL or without a CWL if the individual meets certain specified requirements.
In April, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill to allow people in Florida to carry legally owned concealed weapons, including firearms, without background checks, training or a concealed license.
This applies to carrying a concealed firearm on your person, which is illegal under 790.001 of the Florida Statutes, unless you have a valid Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP). This includes carrying it in your shirt or pocket or jacket where another person may not ordinarily see it.
Concealed Weapon or Firearm License (CWFL) holders in Florida can carry a loaded handgun in their vehicle, while non-CWFL holders must ensure the firearm is securely encased or not readily accessible for immediate use.
The state is now permitless carry. A resident, or non-resident, of Florida is eligible to carry a concealed firearm in public if they would otherwise meet the eligibility criteria for obtaining a Florida concealed carry permit (see below).
