Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Challenge The course lengths above are based upon a 9 student to 1 instructor ratio. For class of more than 9 students, additional time or assistance from additional instructors may be needed.

First of all, you will need a current certification in the discipline you plan to teach, such as AHA Heartsaver or AHA BLS Provider. Next, youll need to complete the online instructor essentials course, which can be done at your own pace and must be completed before the instructor course.
AHA instructor renewal requirements: Teach a minimum of 4 classes in 2 years. Pass both the Provider and Instructor exams for each discipline taught. Complete Skills Verification for each discipline taught. Keep current with all updates from the AHA.
AHA chose a ratio of 3 students to 1 manikin to optimize the amount of time each student spends practicing while keeping the length of the course reasonable. If an instructor chooses to have a lower student to manikin ratio, the students will have more practice time without affecting the length of the course.
