Trace cells that provide data to a formula (precedents) Select the cell that contains the formula for which you want to find precedent cells. To display a tracer arrow to each cell that directly provides data to the active cell, on the Formulas tab, in the Formula Auditing group, click Trace Precedents .
The Trace Dependents tool in Excel allows you to see which cells are affected by the value of a selected cell. Heres how to use it: Select the cell you want to trace dependents for. Go to the Formula Auditing group on the Formulas tab.
The MATCH function can retrieve data from another sheet when used with the INDEX function. For example, if you want to retrieve the value in cell B2 from Sheet2 in a workbook, you can use the following formula: =INDEX(Sheet2! A1:B10,MATCH(B2,Sheet2! A1:A10,0),2) .
Heres how to use it: Select the cell you want to trace dependents for. Go to the Formula Auditing group on the Formulas tab. Click on the Trace Dependents button ( or Ctrl + [ ). If the cell has multiple dependents, you can use the Trace Dependents button again to trace the dependents of the dependent cells.
Follow these steps: Select the cell for which you want to identify the dependent cells. To display a tracer arrow to each cell that is dependent on the active cell, on the Formulas tab, in the Formula Auditing group, click Trace Dependents .
Youll see Trace Precedents as the first shortcut, triggered by holding down Ctrl + Shift + [ on a PC or Control + Shift + [ if on a Mac. When you run the shortcut, youll see a window pop up with the cell that youre on as the home cell with a list of all precedent cells beneath it.
Excel Precedents Keyboard Shortcuts There are specific keyboard shortcuts that can be used to track how formulas are linked within an Excel model. The shortcuts include: Trace Precedents: Press Ctrl followed by the square bracket [. The shortcut takes you to the first cell used by the active cell with the formula.
