VLOOKUP is a function that searches for the value you specify. The result returns a matching value from another column. To be more technical, you choose a range, and VLOOKUP looks up the value in the first column. The result it returns is a value from the same row of another column.
XLOOKUP allows you to customize text when a valid match is not found, while VLOOKUP only shows you an #N/A (error sign). XLOOKUP allows you to specify a search mode (such as starting to look from the top or the bottom of a table) while VLOOKUP can only start looking for values from the top.
Use the VLOOKUP function to look up a value in a table. For example: =VLOOKUP(A2,A10:C20,2,TRUE) =VLOOKUP(Fontana,B2:E7,2,FALSE)
Use VLOOKUP when you need to find things in a table or a range by row. For example, look up a price of an automotive part by the part number, or find an employee name based on their employee ID.
What Is VLOOKUP in Excel? VLOOKUP is a powerful function in Excel that searches for a value in the first column of a range (table or array) and returns a corresponding value in the same row from a specified column. The V in VLOOKUP stands for Vertical, indicating that it searches vertically (downward) in a table.
VLOOKUP Examples Say your boss asks you to use VLOOKUP to find Wills Employee ID. The value we know (lookupvalue) in the first column is Will Ferrell and our lookuprange can be A:B, A:C, or A1:B6, etc. Employee name is column 1 in our lookup range, and we want Employee ID so we will specify 2 for column number.
The XLOOKUP function searches a range or an array, and then returns the item corresponding to the first match it finds. If no match exists, then XLOOKUP can return the closest (approximate) match. *If omitted, XLOOKUP returns blank cells it finds in lookuparray.
