The nurse will ask you to lie back on a bed, usually with your legs bent, feet together and knees apart. Sometimes you may need to change position during the test. Theyll gently put a smooth, tube-shaped tool (a speculum) into your vagina. A small amount of lubricant may be used.
The test is done in your doctors office or clinic. Youll lie back on a table with your feet placed firmly in stirrups. Youll spread your legs, and your doctor will insert a metal or plastic tool called a speculum into your vagina. Theyll open it so that it widens the vaginal walls.
Youll lie down on your back on an exam table with your knees bent. Your heels rest in footrests called stirrups. Your healthcare professional will gently put an instrument called a speculum into your vagina. The speculum holds the walls of your vagina apart so that your cervix is easily seen.
The Pap test (also called a Pap smear or cervical cytology) collects cervical cells so they can be checked for changes caused by HPV that mayif left untreatedturn into cervical cancer. It can find precancerous cells and cervical cancer cells.
Youll lie on your back on an exam table with your knees bent. Your feet will usually be placed on the corners of the table or in supports called stirrups. Youll likely be asked to slide your body toward the end of the table and let your knees fall open.
The patient should be supine, in dorsal lithotomy position to correctly perform a Pap smear (see the image below). The coccyx of the patient must be at the edge of the examination table to provide adequate visualization of the cervix once the speculum is inserted.
Cancer of the cervix is more likely to be successfully treated if its found early. The Pap test is useful for finding cancerous cells, and other cervical and vaginal problems, such as precancerous cells and inflammation.
