Proper Lubrication. Mechanical seals rely on the fluid film between the seal faces to reduce heat and friction. The fluid being pumped in most cases provides this lubrication as it comes into contact with the seal faces. Maintain your seal by not operating in a dry run.
Can they run dry? Generally, liquid lubricated seals should not be dry run regularly or for prolonged periods. However, some mechanical seals with a carbon face will tolerate marginal lubrication and short, intermittent periods of dry running.
The purpose of the maintenance procedure is to flush any debris from between the seal faces. That debris may have come from particulates in the process fluid, corrosion from aging piping, or metal from an abraded pump volute or impeller.
Storage temperatures should not exceed 50 C (120F). Low temperatures are not permanently harmful provided the rubber items are handled carefully and not distorted. When taken from low temperatures items should be raised to approximately 30C ( 70F)before they are used.
Routinely inspect the mechanical seal, looking out for signs of wear, damage, or leakage. Unusual vibrations or sounds can often hint at seal complications. Lubrication is Key: A well-lubricated mechanical seal is vital. Proper lubrication minimizes friction and averts overheating.
The primary seal is essentially a spring loaded vertical bearing - consisting of two extremely flat faces, one fixed, one rotating, running against each other. The seal faces are pushed together using a combination of hydraulic force from the sealed fluid and spring force from the seal design.
Under ideal conditions, a mechanical seal could last several years. However, in harsh operating conditions such as high temperatures, high pressures, or when dealing with abrasive or corrosive fluids the lifespan could be docHubly shorter, potentially only a few months.
