Chinking has always been part of log home building. Traditional chinking used to be made from clay, dust, lime, and ash. It was then applied between the logs to seal the gaps.
It is always important to seal the exterior side with log home caulk or chinking to keep moisture (in the form of rain or splash-back) out from the log joints. The log caulking also helps to keep insects from working their way in.
Step-By-Step Process: How to Fill Gaps In a Log Cabin Remove Standing Water: Apply Extra Wood Preservative. Apply Log Home Stain Clean Checks. The Backer Rod. Apply the Caulk or Chinking. Tool The Bead.
I shake my 5 gallon Anchorseal well and pour about 1-1/2 gal into a Walmart pump up sprayer. I spray the end of the logs and if needed sometimes grab a brush and spread it a little. I find this is much quicker and puts a thicker coat of seal on the ends of the logs.
In our line of work, we are fortunate to meet log home owners throughout the Midwest and Southern states and often many of the same repair and maintenance log home questions are on their minds. How often should I reseal my log home? The short answer is usually every 3-5 years but this can vary due to many factors.
It is better to use rain gutters when constructing your overhangs to mitigate log rot and strengthen the structure of your log cabin. Moisture is enemy number 1 for your log home. Your logs should ideally have moisture content around 14-15%. and anything above it will cause mildew, mold, blistering and log rot.
Once its all sanded how you like it, preserve your stump with several layers of polyurethane. Minwaxs Helmsman Spar Urethane is great for this. The ends will soak up way more than the sides, so put extra layers on the top and bottom. I just used a foam brush for this, and it worked great.
