Answer and Explanation: George comes to Lennie and shoots him in the back of the head. Before he shoots him, however, he has Lennie look across the river and imagine the farm they talked about getting. George recites the dream for Lennie before he takes the shot.
In Chapter 4, Lennie gets mad at Crooks when he thinks that Crooks knows something about George getting hurt. Crooks tries to explain to Lennie that he was asking a hypothetical question, but Lennie does not understand. It takes Crooks some time to pacify Lennies fears that George is in danger.
In Chapter 5, Steinbeck brings the theme of entrapment to a climax through the interaction between Lennie and Curleys wife and the symbol of the vulnerable soft animal. Lennie and Curleys wife are brought together in the barn because of their loneliness and need for friendship and affection.
