Once you define your data protection policies and assign AWS resources to the policies, AWS Backup automates the creation of backups and stores those backups in an encrypted backup vault that you designate.
Snapshots are used to restore volumes or create existing ones. AMI is a template that can be used to create an EC2 instance exactly the same as the EC2 instance when the image was taken at a particular instance.
Using AWS Console 02 Navigate to Amazon EC2 console at . 03 In the navigation panel, under Images, choose AMIs. 04 Select the Amazon Machine Image (AMI) that you want to examine. 05 Select the Details tab from the console bottom panel and copy the AMI ID attribute value.
If you create an AMI from an existing instance, once the AMI is created, AWS creates a snapshot of the root storage as well as all the EBS volumes that are attached to the instance. When you deregister the AMI, it is simply deleted.
You cant delete a snapshot of the root device of an EBS volume used by a registered AMI. This consideration applies even if the registered AMI is deprecated or disabled. You must first deregister the AMI before you can delete the snapshot. For more information, see Deregister your AMI.
Both the EBS snapshot and the AMI are automatically stored on Amazon S3 which is known for being highly durable and reliable. (Learn more with this post: 3 Ways To Backup And Recover EC2 Windows Instances) Most of the recently introduced tools, including the ones discussed below, focus on EBS volumes alone.
Backups are made from the backups panel under Settings System Backups. There is also a service available that allows you to trigger the creation of a backup from an automation. Backups are stored in a compressed archive file (.tar) and by default, stored locally in the /backup directory.
By default, Amazon RDS creates and saves automated backups of your DB instance securely in Amazon S3 for a user-specified retention period.
