- Hey, this is Tony with Nextiva, and today were gonna look at what a VoIP phone is and how it works. First, lets get a basic understanding of VoIP, which is short for voice over internet protocol. A VoIP phone system is one that uses the internet to make phone calls instead of traditional landlines. In other words, its a phone system that uses the cloud. Now there are two types of phones that will work on a cloud-based phone system, hard phones and soft phones. Hard phones are physical phones, similar to this one, and connect to the internet using an ethernet cable. This obviously looks just like a traditional desk phone, but Ill highlight the differences in a moment. The second type of phone I mentioned is a soft phone, or a software-based phone. This is actually an app that you can download to your laptop, tablet, or smartphone, and it gives you the ability to make and receive calls using that device. For example, if Im not at my desk to make a call using a VoIP hard phone, th

VoIP has become a common solution in offices and some homes, and now its beginning to look like a viable replacement to cellphone service on mobile devices with the potential for cost savings to organizations that manage many devices.
Every time you use your Mac or Windows computer to call someone using the internet, you are using VoIP. For instance, when you use Skype or Facebook Messenger, these are VoIP applications. Lets learn a bit more about VoIP examples and how youre able to make those VoIP phone calls.
VoIP enables you to route and transfer calls to any device, and you can use any device to make and answer calls, including normal landline phones.
VoIP and landline are two different things. VoIP is a type of internet service that allows users to make telephone calls via their computers, smartphones or other devices. Landline refers to the traditional telephone system, which uses wires and cables to transmit signals between two points.
While the name itself mentions the Internet, can you still make calls without the Internet or when the Internet is down? In a word, yes. Your VoIP can continue to operate as intended when you use a VoIP service provider such as SSI who offers built-in redundancy and call continuity.
VoIP allows sharing a phone number across multiple devices. Calls made to that number can be answered from any other device that uses the same number, thereby eliminating missed calls from customers and the need for call transfers.
Are VoIP calls traceable? Yes. They are very traceable if the call has to traverse the internet, or the public switched telephone network at some point in its journey. You cant do anything on the Internet without some sort of digital trail being left behind.
This number is no different from your traditional numbers. You can use it to make and receive calls and send and receive texts. Since VoIP works over the internet, you can not only use it on mobile phones but any connected device.
Regular phone systems provide better connectivity for long distance calls as VoIP require internet access for communicating outside your Local Area Network. Regular phone systems receive their power from the telephone exchange whereas VoIP phones require external power supply.
A reverse lookup service will tell you if the caller is a VoIP number, who owns the number, and their address. Alternatively, if you have a VoIP phone, you can ask your provider to do a CNAM lookup to learn more about the caller.
