An ACL LCL tear is a severe injury of the anterior cruciate ligament and the lateral collateral ligament. When a combined ACL LCL injury occurs, one may feel or hear a pop, followed by swelling, pain, and joint instability. A torn ACL requires reconstruction. A tendon graft is taken from the patient and the torn ligament is removed. The surgeon will drill tunnels into the femur and the tibia. This enables surgeons to accurately position and attach the graft. The graft is then secured with screws or other devices. Repair or reconstruction of the torn LCL will depend on the severity of injury. The surgeon will repair the LCL, sewing the torn ends together and reattaching to the bone, if necessary.

The short answer is yes. After the pain and swelling subsides and if there is no other injury to your knee, you may be able to walk in straight lines, go up and down stairs and even potentially jog in a straight line. The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is an important ligament that provides stability to the knee.
In general, the recovery time for ACL tears is about six to nine months without surgery. However, balancing resting the ACL with therapeutic movement can help keep you in the lower end of this range. Rest is important for ACL tears because your body does most of its healing when you arent moving.
Surgery for an ACL Injury We consider non-surgical treatments first, but if the tear is complete and the knee is unstable, or the knee doesnt heal with non-surgical treatment, surgery may be necessary. The ACL cannot heal on its own because there is no blood supply to this ligament.
Untreated ACL injuries accelerate the development of osteoarthritis. Without proper support from the ACL, the articular cartilage starts to break down at a more rapid pace than normal. Following your knee injury, bleeding can occur inside the joint. You may or may not have signs alerting you to the problem.
A torn ACL cant heal on its own, but its possible to live with it (especially if you have a low-grade tear). But if youre an athlete or want to return to physical activity, youll need surgery to repair your ACL. Most people choose to have an ACL tear surgically repaired.
Very minor tears (sprains) may heal with non-surgical treatments and regenerative medicine therapy. But full ACL tears cannot be healed without surgery. If your activities do not involve making pivoting movements on the knee, physical therapy rehabilitation may be all you need.
A number of options exist for revision ACL reconstruction, including using one of the patients own tendons. The patellar tendon, quadriceps tendon, hamstring tendon or allograft tissue may be used. The use of a tendon from the patients other knee is sometimes considered, as well.
