While George is the main protagonist of the story (though the same could be argued about Lennie), Of Mice and Men has many other interesting characters despite its short length. These include the antagonist Curley, the farmhands Carlson and Slim, the swampers Candy and Crooks, and Curleys wife.
-Indirect Characterization: Candy is scared that the ranch will eventually get rid of him because he isnt useful anymore. This fear is personified in Candys dog, who is killed by Carlson because he thinks that the dog has no purpose.
George is a protective man, who has been caring for his friend Lennie for a long time. The two men are not related but have been friends since they were children, so as well as enjoying his company, George also feels responsible for his welfare. George often talks to Lennie about their dream.
Curley is a very aggressive and violent character. He is the Bosss son and takes advantage of the power that he has over the other men on the ranch to treat them cruelly and pick fights. He is physically small and so is resentful of bigger men and picks a fight with Lennie because of this.
Candy is friendly and talkative, and despite the fact that he is afraid of losing his job because of his physical impairment, he is still hopeful he will be able to have his own stake in the future. Candy has his dog, who is also old and crippled, to keep him company.
Candy is friendly and talkative, and despite the fact that he is afraid of losing his job because of his physical impairment, he is still hopeful he will be able to have his own stake in the future.
Steinbeck delivers a simple but effective description of Candy as the archetypal old man, enabling the reader to visualise the character so we can engage closely with his experiences in the novel.
