The subject in a simple sentence is the noun, sometimes with its article, that is being described by the verb in the sentence. In the sentence The man ran down the street, the man is the subject of this simple sentence.
Looking for the verb in the sentence is a good first step. Asking what or who is doing the action can help discover the subject. Once the noun that is being described is identified, the next step is to look for the surrounding words that are used to modify the noun and give it more details.
Here are some examples: Example: Jennifer walked to the store. In this sentence, the subject is Jennifer and the verb is walked. Example: After lunch, I will call my mother. In the sentence, the subject is I and the verb is will call. Example: You were a great singer. Example: Mosquito bites itch.
Subjects usually come before verbs. The subject is the word that you find when you ask the question: (Who or What) + (Verb) + (The rest of the sentence)?
The subject of the sentence is what (or whom) the sentence is about. In the sentence The cat is sleeping in the sun, the word cat is the subject. A predicate is the part of a sentence, or a clause, that tells what the subject is doing or what the subject is.
Omitting Subjects and Auxiliary Verbs We can omit both the subject pronoun (most likely I and you) and the auxiliary verb at the beginning of a clause when the meaning is obvious. This is very common in informal English, especially with questions. [Are you] Done with your food?
Someone or something must also be present in the sentence the who or what youre talking about in relation to the action or state of being expressed by the verb. The someone or something doing the action or being talked about is the subject. A someone must be a person and a something must be a thing, place, or idea.
Example: Jennifer walked to the store. In this sentence, the subject is Jennifer and the verb is walked. Example: After lunch, I will call my mother. In the sentence, the subject is I and the verb is will call.
