After use EGT probes will sometimes experience whats called aging. Aging causes the measurement to shift a bit, 10 degrees is not unheard of.
During normal driving, on a level road, EGTs should be in the 600 to 800-degree range. A lower cruising EGT can be a great indicator of getting good fuel economy. Even during normal driving, exhaust gas temperature is a value that can tell you how efficiently your engine is working at a given moment, gear, and speed.
At Manta Performance, we recommend that your EGT stay under 550C (as measured at the turbo outlet) to assure your engines safety. What happens when your EGT gets too high? Nothing good! Certain parts of your engine can fail due to the excessive heat produced.
One of the common causes of exhaust gas temperature sensor failure is exposure to excessively high temperatures over 900C in some case - the very thing they protect other components from.
Inspect the sensor for any build-up of contaminants and clean with a clean, dry cloth as required.
The temperature sensor does occassionally fail in a gauge but this is not often. The most common causes of an Exhaust Temperature gauge not working is wiring or incorrect installation. If your gauge is erractically jumping around or measuring maximum temperature this is most often the cause of a damaged sensor.
CANDLE TEST With the EGT still connected to your instrument, hold the tip of the probe in the hottest part of a paraffin-based household candle. You should get a reading of 930 deg F (500 deg C) on your instrument. If you do, your sender is good!
Properly installed EGTs that have not been subjected to any adverse operating condition can be expected to last up to 100,000 miles or more. For the recommended inspection/testing or service intervals, consult the vehicles operating manual.
