Application state is stored in a key/value dictionary that is created during each request to a specific URL. You can add your application-specific information to this structure to store it between page requests. Once you add your application-specific information to application state, the server manages it.
This means that user data is not persisted from one Web page to the next in a Web site. One way to maintain state is through the use of cookies. Cookies store a set of user specific information, such as a reference identifier for a database record that holds customer information.
Data objects such as hash tables, strings, array objects, array list objects, Boolean values and custom-type converters can be stored in view state. View state is ideally used when the data to be preserved is relatively small and the data need not be secured.
Basically View State is a client-side State Management technique. We know that the web applications are stateless because they use the HTTP protocol and HTTP is a stateless protocol. The data saved in a View State will be stored in a hidden format.
View State is the method to preserve the Value of the Page and Controls between round trips. It is a Page-Level State Management technique. View State is turned on by default and normally serializes the data in every control on the page regardless of whether it is actually used during a post-back.
there is no viewstate in MVC because its not required. a MVC view is a template engine, while webforms used a control tree. with webforms on postback the tree needed to rebuilt before postback values could be applied, and this often required viewstate.
ViewState is stored in a hidden field on the page at client side. ViewState is transported to the client and back to the server, and is not stored on the server or any other external source.
