Using On-premises database it is usually a bad idea to shrink the log file since it can impact performance, but using Azure SQL Database it even make less sense in most cases, since Azure SQL Database automatically shrinks transaction log file to avoid excessive space usage.
One command that is extremely helpful in understanding how much of the transaction log is being used is DBCC SQLPERF(logspace). This one command will give you details about the current size of all of your database transaction logs as well as the percent currently in use.
Shrink log file size To reduce the physical size of a physical log file, you must shrink the log file. This is useful when you know that a transaction log file contains unused space. You can shrink a log file only while the database is online, and at least one virtual log file (VLF) is free.
Understand shrinking the log If you need to recover disk space from the transaction log file, consider shrinking the log file. Shrinking recovers space by moving data from the end of the file to unoccupied space at the front of the file.
Its safe, but do it at a quiet time when theres low transactional activity. Its recommended to shrink the log to its minimal size and then grow it to its normal size (this will ensure the correct number of VLFs (internal virtual log files) are created, which improves performance for logged commands).
Answer. You have three options to be relieved from the situation: (1) Commit or Rollback oldest uncommitted transaction, (2) Increase log area, or (3) use Advanced Log Space Management (ALSM). As a quick workaround, specify the transaction causing transaction log is full situation, then commit or rollback it.
Try one of the 4 suggestion below to fix this issue: Under SQL Server Management Studio set the Maximum File Size under options for Altiris database to Unrestricted File Growth. Increase the Restricted File Growth (MB) size to a larger value creating space for transaction logs to grow. Shrink the log files from task.
Although there is no one optimal value for Transaction Log File initial size and auto-growth that fits all situations, but setting the initial size of the SQL Server Transaction Log file to 20-30% of the database data file size and the auto-growth to a large amount, above 1024MB, based on your database growth plan can
